The Blacktop at Sunrise

It’s 29 degrees out and 8:15 am. I take a breath and the exhale floats away in a frosty cloud. The morning glow paints the asphalt in color, highlighting every detail. Every speck of dirt, every pebble, and groove can be seen.

Glowing headlights loom in the near distance, but for a brief moment, it’s nearly silent. Only the soft humming of tires on the blacktop can be heard in the background. Its beautiful, that peaceful moment.

Then a blast of wind hits my face as cars rush past at 65 mph. Sand and rocks pepper my right arm. I enjoy the rush as my blood pumps harder. This is even more beautiful than the moment of calm. Ever focused, I snap away at the oncoming vehicles. The corners of my mouth curve up into a smile. I’ve gotten my fix. It’s going to be a great day in Boise, ID.
